Westwego grew out of a town called Salaville, founded in 1892 by Pablo Sala along the Company Canal, a Barataria-to-Lafourche shipping channel dug in the 1830s. A fire destroyed roughly 42 downtown buildings in 1907, and the L.J. Bernard Hardware Store that survived is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and houses the Westwego Historical Museum today, giving Westwego a genuinely old, small-river-city core that most of its West Bank neighbors don't have.
Westwego's worst single disaster wasn't a hurricane: a grain elevator explosion at the Continental Grain Company facility in 1977 killed 36 people, making it the deadliest grain-elevator accident in U.S. history, and it remains part of how the town understands its own risk from the heavy industry along its riverfront.
