On March 22, 2022, an EF3 tornado with peak winds up to 165 mph — the strongest ever confirmed in the New Orleans area — tore an 11-mile path from Gretna through Arabi and into New Orleans East, damaging more than 150 homes concentrated along Friscoville Avenue, St. Claude Heights, and Benjamin Street, with several homes losing their entire roof. A second tornado hit roughly the same footprint again that December.
