Gentilly Terrace itself, though, sits on a natural ridge that traces the historic banks of Bayou Gentilly — genuinely higher ground than the swampland drained to build the rest of the neighborhood around it.
Lake Terrace and Lake Oaks, along the lakefront edge, are a different case again: that land was raised artificially by the Orleans Levee Board, and it's one of the more affluent pockets in this part of the city as a result. The city has leaned into that mixed-elevation reality rather than fight it — Gentilly is the site of a $141 million federally-funded resilience district that includes the 25-acre Mirabeau Water Garden (built to store up to 10 million gallons of stormwater), a stormwater network running through Pontchartrain Park and Gentilly Woods, and green-infrastructure work near Gatto and Filmore parks — all aimed at the lower-lying pockets that don't have Gentilly Terrace's ridge or Lake Terrace's engineered elevation working in their favor.
