LaPlace sits outside the roughly $14.5 billion levee system that was rebuilt around New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Ida made that gap brutally clear in August 2021: LaPlace saw roughly 191 National Guard water rescues, and insurance data put wind-claim rates here at 75 to 82 percent of policies — the highest in the state — with about 58 percent of flood policies also filing claims.
